CDL ELDT theory vs written exam practice

Since February 2022, new Class A and Class B CDL applicants must completeEntry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory from an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test. That is separate from the written knowledge tests you take at your state DMV or licensing office.

Frequently asked questions

What is CDL ELDT?

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is federally required theory instruction for new Class A and Class B CDL applicants. You must complete an FMCSA-registered provider before taking the skills test.

Does PassCDL replace ELDT?

No. PassCDL is written exam practice — general knowledge, air brakes, endorsements, and full exam simulations. ELDT theory is a separate one-time course from an FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR) school.

What should I do first — ELDT or practice tests?

Many students start ELDT theory and use PassCDL practice tests in parallel to prepare for DMV written exams. Written knowledge tests and ELDT theory cover overlapping topics but are separate requirements.

Educational content only. Verify ELDT providers at the official FMCSA Training Provider Registry before enrolling. PassCDL is not affiliated with FMCSA, any state DMV, or the providers listed above.
