What Is CDL ELDT Theory Training?
Published June 24, 2026
Since 2022, new Class A and Class B CDL applicants must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory from an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test. This is separate from the written knowledge tests you take at your state licensing office.
ELDT vs DMV written tests
| Step | Where | PassCDL helps? |
|---|---|---|
| ELDT theory | FMCSA Training Provider Registry school | No — use a registered ELDT provider |
| Written knowledge | State DMV / licensing agency | Yes — practice tests & exam simulations |
